My Girl Crush: Dorothy Dandridge

Written by: Leah C (yeh, you know me!)

Last week, Press Princess Amica uploaded this photo of Dorothy Dandridge to our blog.

Just seeing this photo of the beautiful oscar nominated Dandridge in her gloriously golden gown and sparkly art deco jewellery reminded me of our very own vintage collections on offer at Kookie LaLa Boutique.

Dorothy Dandridge was, and still is a fantastic inspiration to many...

She was one of the first black female actresses to ever break Hollywood and was the first ever black woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as "Carmen" in Carmen Jones.

Here is a clip of Dorothy in Carmen Jones, which also featured an all black cast. This was a very rare and new thing for major Hollywood movies, and the film enjoyed great success.

Growing up, my mother (Hey, Ma!) had a major influence on me in getting to know such great Hollywood stars and musicals alike. In fact, over the coming weeks I may do a regular feature in bringing some extra nostalgia to this blog by profiling some of the greatest movies stars who lived.
(Let me know if you have any suggestions!)

All weekend I have become a little Dorothy Dandridge obsessed.... Reading, watching and singing every thing I could find on her. It has totally rekindled my love for her and thus my "girl crush" continues.... Can you blame me?!

Get a load of these snaps, and you'll know what I mean...

Stunning!

Hot Pink mermaid chic!

Casually Fabulous!

Quietly confident!

Move over honey, Dorothy D is in the room!!

 Beautiful and sassy, right?!

If you havent already seen it, check out the movie of her life entitled "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge". It was released in 1999 and starred Halle Berry as Dorothy which I reckon was a great choice of casting for this role, do you agree?

Dorothy Dandridge & Halle Berry

Berry took on the role of Dandridge effortlessly and I reckon this movie should have enjoyed much more acclaim than it got credit for.

Here's a little trailer of it to tickle yer pickle:
